Sierk Orthodontics in West Linn is making teeth straighter using
a cutting-edge treatment that lessens the treatment time, is more discreet and allows for less plaque build-up

By Erick Mertz - There is a new innovative option when considering orthodontic treatment for your child or yourself in West Linn. Dr. Christopher Sierk of Sierk Orthodontics is offering the latest appliances in his field: self-ligating brackets.

Self-ligating brackets work differently than traditional braces.

Replacing the familiar elastic tie - or colors - is a clip or sliding door mechanism which passively holds the wire in the brackets. This creates a system with minimized friction that places much lighter forces on the teeth and jaw. These lighter forces allow the teeth to move quickly and efficiently. Some of the most common names for these appliances are the "Smart Clip" and "Damon" brackets.

Tangible treatment advantages that come with self-ligating brackets are numerous.

A patient can expect the potential for a reduction in the length of treatment. Overall aches and pains are lessened as well, with the lighter forces applied on the teeth.

Fewer on-going appointments for maintenance and adjustments is a plus because there are no ties - colors - to change. Sierk is able to see a patient with self-ligating brackets once every eight weeks rather than once every six weeks with traditional bracket system.

Self-ligating brackets are also more hygienic than traditional brackets. They allow for less plaque build-up and opportunity for tooth decay around the braces, as they are smaller in size and eliminate the need for elastic bands. Good hygiene is still important for the patient with self-ligating brackets, but it is much easier.

Ideal for adult patients seeking to discreetly improve their smile, the appearance of a clear self-ligating system is an obvious improvement of aesthetic dentistry. The new materials that are used or these clear brackets are much better than the clear brackets of the past, as they are more resilient against staining.

If clear, discreet braces aren't what children want, Sierk still offers traditional braces to his patients and has options for adding decorative colors.

"Sure, we can add them. Some kids want them," Sierk says, one of a family of dental professionals.

"Maybe for celebrating a particular holiday, or for their sports teams, the option is there."

Sierk feels strongly that this is the wave of the future.
